It’s Time to Celebrate, Lefties

Thank you for joining me this evening in this, my stream of consciousness writing about the election. I wanted to share a few thoughts with y’all about why we should be celebrating tonight. It’s been a rough four years. We need to take a break from being angry all the time. Pop open some champagne (or mezcal as I am doing with some local democrats in a couple hours) and be a little happy. Celebration is necessary.

You know why? Because we won big. And don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. We won in spite of a reported 200,000 voters Georgia tried to purge from the rolls for allegedly having the wrong address. We won against repressive voter id laws which affect millions of Americans. We won against a president who allowed a virus to massacre thousands of people of color. We won against the attempted shutdown of mail-in ballots.

And we won on an explicitly anti-racist message. We won with the first black, south asian, and woman vice presidential nominee. And when the election gets certified it will probably be a win of over 300 votes in the electoral college. We brought out the highest voter turnout ever. We kicked ass.

The work of organizing for a better future isn’t just about being miserable all the time and constantly thinking about our problems. It also exists in knowing when we get things right and celebrating even when we know things aren’t fully fixed, but they can be. Celebration is part of ‘the work’ too.

Today, we got things right, and tomorrow we will have the opportunity to fix what remains: climate change, racism, and poverty. Tonight, I am thrilled. Tomorrow, we’ll get back out there. Let’s celebrate.
